In a five-player trade with the Charlotte Bobcats, the Mavericks sent C Erick Dampier, G Matt Carroll and F Eduardo Najera and in exchange received C Tyson Chandler and F/C Alexis Ajinca. The team also resigned F Dirk Nowitzki to a 4-year $80 million contract. The team also resigned newly traded C Brendan Haywood to a 6-year $55 million deal. As a backup, the Mavericks also signed former Spurs project C Ian Mahinmi to a 2-year deal.

In the 2010 NBA Draft, the Mavericks had two picks. In the first round, they selected SG Dominique Jones with the 25th overall selection and sent their second round pick, C Solomon Alabi (50th overall selection) to Toronto in exchange for a future 2nd round draft pick.

The Mavericks are hoping that a lineup of G Jason Kidd, SG Rodrigue Beaubois, SF Caron Butler, PF Dirk Nowitzki and C Tyson Chandler can better match up against the Spurs lineup of G Tony Parker, SG Manu Ginobili, SF Richard Jefferson, PF Tim Duncan and C Tiago Splitter. Coach Carlisle, in his second season as the Mavericks Head Man will look to the leadership of both Kidd and Nowitzki to guide the team through a much improved and tougher Western Conference.
